Punishment is not one uniform pair list. It contains two three-branch groups, one two-branch pair, and four self-punishing branches that require the same branch to repeat.

How the inherited set is built
Groups, one pair, and four repetitions
Tiger–Snake–Monkey form the Punishment of Ingratitude; Ox–Dog–Goat form the Punishment of Bullying; Rat–Rabbit complete the Punishment of Rudeness as a pair. A two-member selection only completes a group when the inherited set itself has two members.
Dragon, Horse, Rooster and Pig are the four self-punishing branches. Their relation cannot appear between different animals: the same branch must occur in two positions, which is why the pair atlas includes twelve same-animal pages.

- It establishes either membership in a named punishment group or a qualifying repeated branch, and states whether the selected branches complete the set.
- What it does not establish
- It does not assign blame, predict punishment as an event, or turn a technical relation name into a judgement about a person. The term names a traditional chart pattern.
