Chinese calendar and zodiac‑year boundaries

This explorer uses Chinese New Year as the start of its year/outer-animal result. The traditional calendar is lunisolar — months follow the moon while the year is kept in step with the solar cycle — so the festival falls on a different Gregorian date each year, between late January and late February. A person born in that window can belong to the preceding cycle year.

Two boundaries, two readings

Chinese New Year and Li Chun are not interchangeable

The two dates answer different questions. Keep the convention visible whenever a birth falls close to the turning point.

Year / outer-animal result

Chinese New Year — used here

The first day of the first lunar month, and the boundary most people meet in zodiac calendars and New Year celebrations. It falls between late January and late February and opens the next animal year.

The start-of-spring solar term, and the year boundary Four Pillars practice uses. Its moment is astronomical rather than calendrical: 立春 fell on 3 February in 2021 and 4 February in 2024. A birth between Chinese New Year and Li Chun carries one year label under each convention.

A calendar assembled over time

Why the calendar looks like this

None of the conventions above were designed at once. Each is the surviving result of an argument — usually a political one — and today's boundaries reflect reforms made two thousand years apart.

  1. Origins

    The day count is older than the dynasties

    The sixty-day cycle of stems and branches appears on Shang dynasty oracle bones, where it was used to name days more than three thousand years ago — before it was ever applied to years. Diviners recorded which day of the sixty a question was asked on, and the count has run without a break since. A day pillar is a position in that same sequence.

  2. Imperial office

    Issuing the calendar was an act of sovereignty

    A Chinese dynasty did not merely keep a calendar; it granted one. Promulgating the calendar was an imperial prerogative, and a neighbouring state adopting it was acknowledging where authority lay. That is why over a hundred calendar systems were issued across Chinese history: a new reign was a reason to reform the calendar, and an inaccurate calendar was a political embarrassment rather than a technical one.

  3. 104 BCE

    The Taichu calendar

    In 104 BCE the Taichu calendar, 太初曆, issued under Emperor Wu of Han, fixed the civil year to begin with the month containing 立春 — the arrangement still in use, and the reason the Tiger month is counted first among the twelve.

  4. 1645

    The reform behind modern solar-term dates

    The Shixian calendar, 時憲曆, adopted at the start of the Qing, was built by the Jesuit astronomers then working at the Imperial Astronomical Bureau. It changed how the twenty-four solar terms are found, and the change is the reason terms drift between years.

  5. Method

    Equal arcs, unequal days

    The older method, 平氣, cut the year into twenty-four equal spans of time. The new one, 定氣, cuts the sun's apparent path into twenty-four equal arcs of angle. Because the Earth moves faster near perihelion, equal arcs do not take equal time — so the terms stopped falling at tidy intervals and started landing a day either side of where a fixed interval would put them. Modern solar-term calendars use 定氣 and follow the sun's apparent longitude rather than equal day counts.

  6. 1660s

    Observation put on trial

    Whether that was an improvement was litigated, not assumed. In the 1660s the court astronomer Adam Schall von Bell was accused of treason over the calendar, stripped of office and condemned to death, the sentence later lifted. His colleague Ferdinand Verbiest regained the post only after a public comparison: rival astronomers submitted noon-shadow lengths and eclipse timings, and court observers compared those figures with the events themselves. The method that matched observation kept the bureau.

  7. 1912

    Two calendars, on purpose

    In 1912 the new Republic adopted the Gregorian calendar for civil business and left the lunisolar calendar in place for festivals, ancestral observance and astrology. Neither replaced the other, so the same day can carry a Gregorian date and a lunisolar date.

  8. Clock

    The reference meridian matters

    One consequence is worth knowing when reading an old chart. Before standard time zones, the calendar was computed for the meridian of the capital, not for a national clock. A boundary falling close to midnight — a solar term late in the evening, or the 23:00 hour that divides the day — can sit on either side depending on which meridian the original computation assumed. Modern published calendars use a standard reference meridian.
