Rooster in a traditional Chinese landscape

Earthly branch 10 of 12

The Rooster

You

The animal is the memorable half of a pairing whose other half does the work. The branch is a position in a twelve-part cycle that names an hour, a month, a direction and a phase — and the rooster was fitted to it, not the other way round.

One position, four scales

What names

One branch marks a place in four different cycles at once. These are the same position counted in different units.

  • 01

    The hour

    17:00–18:59

Traditionally the hour hens come home to roost as the light goes.

  • 02

    The month

    白露 Báilù

White Dew opens it — month 8 counted from 立春, not from January.

  • 03

    The direction

    West

The twelve branches divide the compass as they divide the day.

  • 04

    The phase

    Metal

十二支五行 — the phase the branch itself carries.

Geometry of the branch circle

Its fixed relations

Three relations are decided by position alone: the branch opposite, the branch it pairs with, and the two it forms a triangle with. None of them is a judgement about people.

  • 冲 · Clash

    Rabbit

Six places opposite, so the two never share a season or an hour.

  • 六合 · Six harmony

    Dragon

One of six pairs whose positions balance across the cycle.

  • 三合 · Trine

    Snake · Rooster · Ox

Four places apart, governing the Metal phase together.

Folklore of the sequence

The Rooster in the Great Race

The folk tale that explains the order of the twelve — told, as it usually is, about an order the calendar had already fixed centuries before any animal was attached to it.

Place10of 12

Spotted the raft in the first place. The three who crossed on it are ranked in the order they stepped off, not by any contest between them.

The twelve branches appear on Shang oracle bones, where they name days; the animals are attached to them much later. The race is how the tradition accounts for an inherited order rather than how that order came about. The full ordering legend

Five meetings in sixty years

The five Rooster pillars

A branch meets only five of the ten stems, because stems and branches advance together and their parities stay locked. That is why there are sixty pairs rather than a hundred and twenty.
