How to Read a BaZi Chart: Day Master, Season and Roots
Begin a BaZi reading with the Day Master and solar month. Then inspect roots in the hidden stems, visible phase relationships, branch interactions and the selected timing layer.
甲 Jia · Yang Wood
Solar month: 丙寅, Tiger. Year 甲辰 · Day 甲辰 · Hour 庚午.
The month branch carries Wood; the Day Master carries Wood. The visible chart has 3 Wood characters, and its hidden-stem list has 3 Wood occurrences.
| Pillar | Branch | Hidden stem | Role | Ten God |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year | 辰 | 戊 Earth | primary | Indirect Wealth |
| Year | 辰 | 乙 Wood | middle | Rob Wealth |
| Year | 辰 | 癸 Water | residual | Direct Resource |
| Month | 寅 | 甲 Wood | primary | Friend |
| Month | 寅 | 丙 Fire | middle | Eating God |
| Month | 寅 | 戊 Earth | residual | Indirect Wealth |
| Day | 辰 | 戊 Earth | primary | Indirect Wealth |
| Day | 辰 | 乙 Wood | middle | Rob Wealth |
| Day | 辰 | 癸 Water | residual | Direct Resource |
| Hour | 午 | 丁 Fire | primary | Hurting Officer |
| Hour | 午 | 己 Earth | middle | Direct Wealth |
Season, roots and revealed month role
The month’s principal hidden stem is 甲 Wood, giving Friend relative to the Day Master. It is revealed among the visible stems. This identifies the month-role candidate; roots and the other relationships complete the reading.

Season and strength
The solar month gives a seasonal context: Wood in spring, Fire in summer, Metal in autumn and Water in winter. Earth branches occur at the four seasonal transitions. Count stems and hidden roots separately from this seasonal support.
Useful-god choices
Qiong Tong Bao Jian discusses early-spring Jia Wood with residual cold and selects Bing Fire and Gui Water for warmth and moisture. A useful-god choice addresses a chart condition; a missing phase alone does not select it. Other readings begin with the month’s structural role.
Ordinary and special structures
Ordinary structures use the month’s principal hidden stem and its Ten God relative to the Day Master, then examine whether that stem is revealed and supported. Special following or transformation structures require their own criteria; an ordinary seasonal chart is not automatically a following structure because one phase is frequent.
Career, wealth and relationships
Officer stars describe regulation and responsibility; Output stars expression; Wealth stars the phase controlled by the Day Master. The day branch is the spouse-palace position. Read these as distinct chart factors and compare their actual visible and hidden occurrences.
Worked charts
The entered chart below is a worked reading of its calculated characters. Try the original example, 10 February 2024 at 12:00, then compare a winter birth to see how the seasonal layer changes.
A spring and winter comparison
The calculated examples 10 February 2024 and 12 December 2023, both at 12:00 China Standard Time, share Jia Chen as the day pillar. The spring chart has Bing Yin month; the winter chart Jia Zi. Jia has Wood roots in both, yet the spring month carries Wood and the winter month Water. Root presence and the seasonal condition therefore describe different parts of strength. Qiong Tong Bao Jian begins spring Jia with Bing and Gui, while its winter Jia discussion turns to Ding and Geng with Bing assisting.
Following and transformation criteria
Di Tian Sui’s commentary describes true following as a Day Master without root or supporting qi alongside an overwhelmingly strong followed phase. The spring example has Jia and hidden Wood roots, so its visible Wood count does not make it a following chart. Its transformation discussion requires the combined phase to connect with the season; a Jia–Ji pair alone does not establish a transformed Earth structure.
Month role and climate adjustment
Yuan Hai Zi Ping emphasizes the month’s Wealth and Officer roles, then their appearance in the other pillars and the Day Master’s strength. Qiong Tong Bao Jian organizes choices by seasonal warmth and moisture. In the spring example the month’s principal Jia is Friend relative to Jia Day Master, while Bing and Gui enter the climate discussion. Those references answer different chart questions.
