BaZi Symbolic Stars: Fourteen Rules and Chart Matches

Symbolic stars use a named reference stem, branch or solar month to select target characters. This lookup shows fourteen rules and the exact natal pillars matching their targets.

Hong Yan uses a stem-to-branch register, while Xian Chi Peach Blossom starts from a branch’s trine. This register follows Wan Minying’s Xing Xue Da Cheng Hong Yan verse, with the day-stem reading taught by Shangguan. Jia targets Horse and Yi targets Monkey; Geng targets Dog and Gui targets Monkey. Keep those four assignments when comparing another register.

Select the reference

Peach Blossom, Travelling Horse and General use the selected day or year branch’s trine. Stem-based stars use that pillar’s stem. Monthly Virtue, Heavenly Virtue and Heavenly Doctor use the birth solar month. Red Beauty keeps the day stem, even when the other rows use a year reference.

Nobleman and Wen Chang tables

This lookup follows the San Ming Tong Hui verses: Geng has Nobleman targets Chou and Wei, and Wen Chang maps Yi to Hai. Some modern tables instead give Geng Yin/Wu and Yi Wu. Keep the named table with the result when comparing charts.

Stars within a chart

Read a match with the pillar carrying it and that pillar’s other relationships. The traditional meanings describe the star vocabulary: a star target and a complete chart reading are different levels of detail.
